Two people were killed in a fire that broke out early Sunday morning at a home near Hesperia, officials said.
Firefighters responded shortly after 5 a.m. to multiple reports of a residential structure fire in the unincorporated community of Oak Hills, according to a news release from the San Bernardino County Fire Department.
Multiple 911 callers said smoke was visible at the single-story house and that occupants were still inside, prompting the Fire Department to dispatch four paramedic engine companies, the statement said.
The first responders arrived to find heavy smoke and flames emanating from the front of the home. According to the Fire Department, two residents, who had been alerted to the fire by smoke detectors, told firefighters that a bedridden relative and another family member were still inside the house.
The firefighters searched the residence as additional engine companies arrived at the scene. Two elderly people were found dead in the room where the fire originated, the news release said. No firefighters or other civilians were injured.
The blaze was “declared under control” within about 20 minutes, officials said. It caused an estimated $100,000 of damage.
Assistance was requested from the American Red Cross, for the two displaced residents.
The cause of the incident was under investigation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the fire marshal’s office.
