The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Rochester Avenue and Jersey Boulevard (map) at about 4:15 p.m., according to a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
Witnesses told investigators they saw two black Ford Mustangs racing southbound on Rochester Avenue when one of them slammed into the driver's side of a 2010 Nissan Altima that was attempting to make a left turn from Jersey Boulevard.
Both cars came to a stop on the southwest corner of the intersection, with the Nissan suffering damage all the way into the passenger compartment, according to the Sheriff's Department.
The driver of the Nissan, identified by authorities as Julio C. Lopez, 46, of Pomona, was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
A 16-year-old resident from Rancho Cucamonga, who was allegedly driving Mustang involved in the collision, has been arrested and was being booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, Teresa McMahon of the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department said Thursday.
Authorities continued to search for the driver of the second Mustang, which was described as a 2000 to 2003 model with a hood scoop.
The driver was believed to be a black man in his early twenties wearing a backward hat, according to the news release.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department at 909-477-2800.
